The 10th-century Muslim mathematician, astronomer and physicist Ibn al-Haitham described the pinhole camera and invented the camera obscura (Latin for "dark chamber"), a precursor to the modern photographic camera.

In the centuries to follow the camera obscura was used as a drawing aid for artists and amateur painters.

In the 1850s, a Scottish scientist, Sir David Brewster, was one of the first to make pinhole photographs and possibly coined the word "pinhole."  Pinhole photography became very popular and extensively used during the 19th Century.
